Introduction to Health Information Privacy and Security
provides an overview of health information privacy and security, outlining the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, as well as other laws and organizations that regulate health information. It outlines the basic terms and concepts related to HIPAA privacy and security, and it introduces the reader to practical themes such as threat identification, data security mechanisms, and business continuity that are critical to the management of health information.
The text is presented in six chapters, beginning with an overview of health information regulation, followed by the presentation of key information related to the HIPAA Privacy Rule and the Security Rule, and closing with a discussion of key changes to the rules as created by the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. Each chapter contains Check Your Understanding questions and concludes with a Real-World Case that illustrates an issue relevant to the topics presented in the chapter. The reader will notice helpful resources in the text such as sample forms, figures that break concepts into manageable portions, and references to further the reader’s understanding about specific topics.
